Pvt Joseph C Hiatt Reported Alive as POW by Japanese
The Hiatt family of near Diller received a Red Cross telegram on June 18 stating their son Pvt Joseph C Hiatt is now being held as a prisoner of war by Japan. Enlisted December 1940, he served with the coast artillery at Fort Mills on Corregidor when it fell.

Two Bridge Plank Cars Arrive for Flood Repairs
Commissioner S C Hutchinson announced that two cars of bridge planks are expected to arrive soon to repair flood damage and construct bridges where needed. One car should arrive any day, the other in about two weeks, with one car destined for Fairbury and the other for Diller.

Steele City to get 100 foot bridge after flood cut through road
Floods two weeks ago carved a 100 ft wide deep channel cutting road between Steele City south bridge and town. Commissioners observed scene as a wooden pole bridge is planned. nearby washouts to be filled and a 40 ft westward stretch being leveled. Steele City has had no Little Blue river travel for 12 days.

P W F Highway Restored After Rock Creek Repairs

Private first class Richard Miller son of Mr and Mrs Scott Miller earned the expert rifle medal after scoring 188 of 210 across 200 and 500 yard events. He ranked among the five top shooters in a 240 man company at Camp Blanding Florida where he also serves as the fastest runner. He entered service April 2 and notes trips to Jacksonville St Augustine and enjoys swimming with memories of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Pvt Elville Schipper has returned to Camp Texas after a furlough.
