When to Cultivate Corn

Specialists from the United States Department of Agriculture advise cultivating corn to keep down weeds and maintain a loose soil mulch until the corn grows. Frequent cultivations are needed when weekly rains crust the soil, breaking crust and restoring mulch to prevent moisture loss. Using double cultivators widened and driving astride alternating rows halves the time to restore mulch after rain.
