Season for Winter Cover Crops Nears
Season for Winter Cover Crops Nears Winter cover crops are busy on American farms starting about September 1. They feed livestock, reduce erosion, improve moisture absorption, and enhance soil fertility when turned under in spring. Government reports highlight their importance in the east central and southern states as the South expands its acreage from a few hundred thousand to several million. A growing postwar farming profit outlook and demand for food fiber and oil support more use of winter cover crops including Austrian winter pea and various clovers, vetches, alfalfa, and other species. With climate and soil differences, a well planned cover crop program yields increasing benefits.
