Rev Esther Young Receives Summer Theology Scholarship

The Rev. Esther Young, pastor of the Diller and Ellis Mathouis churches, won a scholarship for a Perkins School of Theology summer course at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. The program runs July 13 to 30, includes board and lodging, tuition, excursions, and recreation. Young departs July 9 via Wichita and Oklahoma City, with guest speakers filling pulpit duties in her absence.

Birthday Picnic in Lincoln and Nebraska Delegation News

A group including Dr and Mrs Viers and Robert Casper visited Lincoln on Sunday for birthday celebrations at Roy Patton's home. Three children attended with Mrs Holle and Mrs Patton joining in the Lincolns. Nebraskans abroad plan the Southern California Summer Nebraska Picnic in Long Beach July 10 with many counties represented.

Red Cross Swimming Classes Start at Crystal Springs Fairbury

Red Cross swimming program begins Monday July 5 with sessions on Monday Wednesday and Friday mornings for three weeks at Crystal Springs Fairbury. Pre classes approved. transportation provided by Ape Ifa track. Bus leaves from Diller Main Street at 8 am and returns by noon. Birthday celebrations and visitors noted in local social column

A June birthday party occurred at the Hill home honoring Donna Jean Maw with relatives and friends. A surprise party for Emma Glathar was held with local attendees. Family visitors from California and Colorado were noted as well as guests from Hershey and Iowa towns visiting local families.

Legion Auxiliary elects officers at June meeting

The American Legion Auxiliary regular meeting at Legion Hall on June 28 elected officers for the year. Retiring officers included Doris Pedendorf president and Naldred Malchow vice president. New officers named were Alma Spielman treasurer Glenda Maw secretary and Opal Glathar chaplain. A social event and food gaiety were planned for July at folding chairs seating and refreshments by Alma Spielman and Opal Glathar. The Nelson family and guests visited relatives in Summerfield and Grand Island while returning home from a social evening with Mr and Mrs Brood Man.

Weekend rainfall and local weather notes in Diller area

Weather Diller reported 14 inches of rainfall over the weekend with one half inch falling Saturday night and one inch Sunday night. Heavy rains were noted in the Hanover district Sunday night and Ellis district recorded one half inch Tuesday night. Roy and Mrs Patton returned from a Chicago vacation where Roy attended his son Robert Patton’s Naval Company graduation ceremonies.

Dr. Joseph Bixby Dies Pioneer Nebraska Physician

Dr. Joseph Bixby aged 74 of Geneva a longtime Nebraska physician died suddenly Friday in his Chicago hotel room. He suffered a heart attack while attending the American Medical Association Convention with his wife. A former president of the Nebraska State Medical Association he had practiced medicine for 50 years. Funeral services were held Monday in Geneva with relatives from Steele City Curtis and Diller in attendance.

Wheat Yields Reported as New Grain Arrives and Local Visits

A harvest update notes good fall wheat yields near 20 bushels per acre if weather remains favorable. Lloyd Royle and Bill Jones report the first loads and tests show 60 bushels per acre on six acres. Local markets pay 2.07 for wheat while farmers count on metrics from the Oy AG Cooper elevator. Several family visits occur in Kansas City and Lincoln with relatives in Diller Oakland and Potter.
