Sam Hutchinson, with recent fire exposure, started his car twice after installing a new battery. A short sparked a blaze melting the vacuum pipe and spilling about a quart of gasoline in the garage. Water buckets kept the fire in check until the gas burned away. no fire department response required. Loss estimated at about $20.
The Farmers Union Cooperative store held its annual meeting at city hall last Saturday afternoon. Directors Arthur Wieths Lecy Tieas and Ed Walker were re-elected for two years. Other board members include Carl Schmeile president Geo. Renz vice president Will Roseman and Bert Bell directors Herman Stabbs manager. A small profit margin was reported for the year.
Fire partially destroyed the EM. Crocker home last Sunday. Officials say ashes near the building started the blaze. Mr Crocker moved his family to town and is staying with Mrs McLaughlin, his mother. They plan to use the McLaughlin farm north west of town this season.
Hutchinson and Dr Dieb visited Lincoln Thursday night to hear former president Herbert Hoover speak at the University of Nebraska coliseum. A massive crowd of 9,500 filled the venue but poor address quality spoiled the event. the reader is advised to hear such speeches on radio or read summaries in the papers.
Mr and Mrs Chas Barber report the Talmage Tribune is published by Mr and Mrs Ward A Welsh, who recently bought the paper. Mrs Welsh was Edna James formerly, daughter of Esme James of Edgar, and granddaughter of the late Wm Diler. She is also niece to Mrs Barber and Mrs Bugbee.
Henry Brett of seven miles north of Diller is elected to the Beatrice Production Credit Association board for a three year term. The group offers short term livestock and tariff operator loans across seven counties: Thayer Jefferson Gage Pawnee Johnson Richardson and Nemaha.
Martin Diekman and his wife visited relatives locally last Friday. Diekman, a truck driver from Burtington Colorado, was en route to York Nebraska to deliver a load, and his wife accompanied him. The couple married shortly before Christmas.
George Sandman plans to quit farming and hold a public sale at his home three miles northeast of Harbine on February 5, 1936. The sale will be advertised next week.
Congressman Binderup replies to inquiries about A A A contract payments. He reports a House Agricultural Committee bill favorably reported providing 266000000 dollars to pay all existing contracts including reduced winter wheat acreage benefits. He expects passage in Congress.
The Jefferson County Red Cross met in Fairbury last Wednesday and elected Earl Sweeney as chairman Ross King as vice chairman Sam Gallamore as secretary Harold Livingstone as treasurer and R M Weblemoe J W Buswell Lester Childers Chester Bonga W E Lea W H Leask and J I Thornton as members of the executive council.
The tentative total for expenses for Jefferson County is set at 261950 for 1936. Emergency relief accounts for most of the increase. The commissioners estimate for 1896 40 years ago was set at 000. Those were hard times too, but no relief to speak of was furnished.
Mrs. Allen a professional nurse arrives in Nebraska to visit her brother John Steiner and relatives and plans to depart on an early morning train for Honolulu Hawaii for her return home.
Mrs Alta E Byers supervisor of the fourth district of the bureau of census at Grand Island has appointed W J Biebesheim H D Holbrook and E S Hawes as enumerators for the census of business for Jefferson county.
Sam traveled from Grundy County Iowa on Friday and Tuesday he completed the fourth truck load of farm equipment. The party plans to depart today with a load of household goods.
Community health updates report mild weather reducing illness but mumps colds and skin troubles persist. Several residents including Mrs L M Hurst Clara Miller and Emma Peters suffer from flu sprained ankle scarlet fever and mumps while Miss Burroughs resumes teaching in Bethel District. Mrs Velma Peters serves at the central office amid flu activity.
A harsh cold wave swept the region with towns reporting subzero lows and frigid afternoons. Readings fell to about 4 below in the morning, 13 below Sunday, and below zero on Monday and Thursday, while Omaha and points north and east reported 20 to 55 below. Sidney, Nebraska stood at 48 degrees above, and Alaska reported 36 above.
Mr G T Eick celebrated his 95th birthday January 19 at his home east of Dilner. Four children one grandchild and others attended the birthday dinner. The family thanks the Congregational church for its birthday wishes and a musical program was rendered by local children and a quartet.
Nebraska plans expanded windbreak and woodlot plantings as Clarke-McNary seedings are offered to farmers. Applications are accepted at the Agricultural Agent's office with 344 600 total trees planned this spring, including broadleaf and evergreen varieties.
The Woman's Club convenes with Mrs. Clark on Tuesday January 28. Leaders include Mrs. Roy Geer and Mrs. John Pulec. Roll call highlights customs of German Russian and Italian youth and a talk by E T Colton on four patterns of revolution and political ideologies in Europe.

The Diller Municipal Band staged a varied program on a bitterly cold night with a large audience. The second act featured Major Sinkey's Amateur Hour including five acts such as the Kolored Band from Harlem and The Music Goes Round and Rotund.
The Liberty Journal notes an application pending before the village board about beer regulations. Local women circulated a petition last Monday reflecting town concerns and involvement in the issue.
The Dempster Mill Manufacturing Co held its annual meeting at Beat Rice. President H L Dempster announced all 7 percent preferred shares will be exchanged for 5 percent preferred shares plus $15 cash per share to cover accumulated dividends, totaling 67 634 254 dollars.
Noted British poet and author Rudyard Kipling died in London after an illness following stomach ulcer surgery. Born in Bombay on December 30 1865 he lived a life of global travel and literary achievement. His son died in World War I at Loos and Kipling was interred in Westminster Abbey.
Parents of band members met in the Bank basement last Saturday night and arranged lessons with Mr Ingresby on Wednesdays. Individual lessons in the afternoon and general practice in the evening will be followed by concerts every other Saturday. Officers elected include Vice President Hardy Goin Secretary Treasurer Francis Goin Jeffrey.
