Winter Strawberries Need Straw Mulch For Frost Protection
The Horticultural Department advises spreading a weed-free straw layer over strawberry plants once the ground freezes to three or four inches. This mulch holds frost in the soil and keeps plants from lifting. Remove part of the straw as growth resumes next spring and leave the rest to shield berries from dirt. If using the matted row system, ensure clean cultivation between runs all summer to conserve moisture.
