George Washington urged a national botanic garden in 1796. Congress granted five acres of swamp land in 1820 to the Columbia Institute, but cultivation failed and the project waited until 1842. The Wilkes expedition brought rare plants from Fiji, the Sandwich Islands, Society Islands, New Zealand and South America, moving by frames in 1844 and into the garden’s first buildings after 1850, with current shelter in 1934.
