Coal Scarcity Spurs City Meeting and Wood Yard Plan

A blizzard threatens coal supply as miners strike reduces fuel. Residents meet at city hall. J. W. Fouts chairs, W. J. Filley reads railroad guidance to release coal. About 1500 pounds remain locally. a village committee plans a wood yard funded by $200 in treasury to buy timber and convert it to stove wood while seeking coal.

Coal committee acts to secure fuel and timber during shortage

The Ten and Coal committees organized with H. K. Shutt as chairman and C. L. Waggoner as secretary. They seek immediate coal release from railroad authorities and plan to buy timber and hire men to cut stove wood at a small cost. They may confiscate coal if needed to prevent shortages within thirty days. Surplus shade trees in town may be cut to aid fuel supply and remove shading obstacles. A coal car arrived Wednesday, supplying twenty people with 500 pound lots. The Shepherd of the Hills is to be shown at Fairbury tonight. Mrs. W. S. Lambert from Guide Rock visited due to her daughter Mrs. Cedric Fanders’s illness.
