On September 1, the district will begin school with a staggered registration. Grade students meet at 9 00 while district 70 high school students register 8 45 to 12 00 and others 1 00 to 5 00. Friday will be a full day and books and assignments issued.
Henry Wiemers and his wife Mrs. Henry Wiemers and daughter Geraldine returned home Saturday after an extended tour through Oregon and California and several states. The trip combined leisure and business as Wiemers, a director of the National Suffolk Sheep Association based in Union Stock Yards Chicago, visited major Suffolk sheep breeders. His catalogues include an interesting story about the Wiemers sheep.
The Republican County Convention will convene at 1:30 p m on August 26 in the District Court room at the courthouse. All Republican candidates will attend and Carl T Curtis, the party’s congressional nominee in the district, will deliver the principal address. C L Geer and Mrs Clarence Stiffen are delegates from Pleasant precinct.
Jefferson county agricultural conservation office opens 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through August 3 to accept applications for 1939 wheat crop insurance. Announcement by E A Jacobs crop insurance supervisor for the county.
The Diller Ball Club lost all games last week including a 3 to 2 setback to Steele City at the picnic and a 9 to 5 loss in Endicott. They travel to Hanover Kansas next Sunday.
The Diller band will give its last concert for the summer next Saturday night. Rehearsals are likely to be suspended for about two weeks starting September first. The group has spent the past month playing at picnics.

Mrs Lillian Ellis and her son Roger traveled from Chester to visit her mother and sister Mrs Wohlfarth and Gretchen Ellis, remaining until Monday morning before returning home.
The Fairbury city park hosts band festival day on August 28 with ten bands and 350 musicians. The Diller Band directed by Nelson Ingalsbe performs a 30 minute concert at 3:00 PM. Harold L. Chatelain leads Fairbury Municipal, joined by Geneva Wilber Plymouth Swanton Beatrice Diller Cuba Marysville KS. Billy Quick will direct one number during the day.
Mr and Mrs Harry Ahrends Delorie and Stanley arrived home Monday evening after a 22 day journey through the west. They visited Mrs Ahrends sister and husband Mr and Mrs Willard Gostelow in Los Angeles and traveled along the southern route stopping at Petrified Forest Grand Canyon and Boulder Dam. They returned via Nevada Salt Lake City Utah and Colorado.
Henry Wiemers and Chas Booz of Portis Kansas left early today with a number of Hereford hogs for the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. The fair starts Friday and lasts about a week. Booz is interested in the Hereford business and the Iowa event attracts large crowds.
A large barn on the John Carico farm in the Henry Brandt place burned early Sunday morning. The loss included alfalfa hay grain and other property. The fire was believed caused by spontaneous combustion. Carico plans immediate rebuilding with Onka Franzen of Ome City handling carpentry.
Clyde Colman and Will Nichol son returned home last Saturday from Fort Crook near Omaha where they spent a month in citizens military training camp. The boys praise the officers and drill work and hope to go again. Six hundred young men attended the camp.

Lieutenant Clarence Kasparek son of Mrs. Anna Kasparek of Odell was buried at Arlington National Cemetery Tuesday this week after being killed in California on August 15 when his plane crashed during night landing practice. He was a Odell high school graduate and a pilot of bomber planes in the federal service.
Mrs. Wm. Jordening aged 56 died last Friday at a Beatrice hospital. She was the mother of Ernest Jordening, a Harbine merchant. Funeral services were held Monday at 1 30 from the family home near Harbine and at 2 from Zion Lutheran Church seven miles north of Diller. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Waggoner's funeral service conducted.
Mrs. F A Houston wife of Frank A Houston of Fairbury died last Sunday after an extended illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon with the county seat quiet out of respect for the esteemed family.
Herman Wallbaum, second son of Henry Wallbaum, living on the old Jansen ranch northeast of Jansen, was found dead yesterday morning hanging from a pulley in an elevator at his home. His father two brothers and a sister survive.
Vernon Green of Topeka Kansas spent a brief Wednesday evening in town visiting his mother Mrs Mary Green and other relatives.
A sizable group from Diller traveled to Steele City's picnic last week, joining the annual event that draws local residents each year.
Cheyenne tops Nebraska winter wheat lists for many regions though rust and bunt susceptibility limit its appeal in rust years. Nebred remains high yielding but rust vulnerable. Turkey praised for rust resistance but lower overall performance. Agronomy dept recommends Turkey for rust years and Cheyenne where conditions permit.
Roy Geer reports from Sprague Canada where he and Mrs. Geer enjoyed their first Canadian dinner and warm pine country. He notes Roy’s recovery and plans to return home with Orlo Geer after visiting Minnesota relatives and Mrs. Geer’s sister.
Mr and Mrs Will Ames of Diller and Mr and Mrs Howard Peters of Fairbury left Sunday morning August 14 in the Ames car for the Black Hills arriving Rapid City Monday afternoon. They visited Hot Springs Custer State Park Boulder Canyon Deadwood Lead Spearfish Nameless Cave Needles Road Badlands and many other places. They started home Saturday morning returning to Fairbury Sunday evening tired but enjoying the trip. One of Em.
Arthur Grone, a successful farmer, tested seed wheat that weighed 49 lbs per bushel. Planted under favorable soil moisture, eight days later germination reached 20 percent, prompting debate over seed quality and farming opinions.
Miss Cleo Green, who was operated on for appendicitis last week, is recovering nicely and returned to her home in Diller today from the Qdell hospital.
Elmer Lohman of Diller, sleeping in his cab, fought three intruders in South Omaha after they tried to steal gas. He headed to a police station after being struck with an iron wrench, sustaining a three inch scalp gash and a bruised face. The incident prompted debate over sleeping in cabs and the use of the term wops.
Mr and Mrs Russell McCreight returned from their wedding trip spent in the Rockies from Colorado Springs to Estes Park. They will go to housekeeping in Fred Starrs furnished residence across from the Congregational church until after the election at least. The bridegroom is a normal training teacher in Diller High School.
Dr. Aubrey Diller arrived from Chicago last Friday to visit his father J. Smith Diller and other relatives. He left Tuesday for Urbana Illinois and will reside in Bloomington Indiana after September 10 to assume Greek professor duties at Indiana University.
New residents Mr and Mrs Henry Blacketer and two children relocated from Harbine to Diller on Wednesday. They occupy the D W Fanders residence near the Congregational church and plan to establish blacksmithing car and body repair services using tools moved from Harbine to a site south of the Record office.
Mr and Mrs Henry Reinholdt and son Malvin of Marcus Iowa visited Miss Lottman and family in Fairbury during picnic week. They also called on sisters Mrs Wm Wiemers Mrs Dan Garton and brother Jake Lottman and families of Diller before returning home Friday after visiting F A Lottman at Liberty.
