Prof Swenk to lecture on Hessian Fly at Diller Hall

Notice states Prof Swenk from the agricultural college will speak at Diller City Hall on Wednesday evening August 6 about the Hessian Fly life history and control. Paralyzed Crab Orchard man hospitalized near Diller

Albert Lukas of Crab Orchard a former Diller resident and father of Charley and Lodger Lukas was stricken with paralysis Saturday a week ago and hospitalized in Beatrice where his condition is listed as serious.

Lincoln man starts 23 month training in Diller shop

E. H. Dunaway of Lincoln from the Veteran's Vocational Training Bureau arranged with Gus Dressen in Diller to give Frank Frisbie vocational training in his shoe and harness shop. The program lasts 23 months until Frisbie learns the trade and can run his own business.

About 350 stockholders and families attended the city hall reception for retiring manager F E Hale hosted by Diller Farmers Grain Co. President F W Steffen led the event, J W Fouts spoke for stockholders and presented Hale a $25 rocking chair. Hale, manager for 17 years, left for Colorado early Wednesday. music by a Zion Lutheran church 22 piece band accompanied the gathering.

Shin Bone Bruise From Block Hit On County Bridge Work

Eat Weaver of the Standard Bridge Co. suffered a severe shin bruise Saturday when a block thrown by a machine struck him. The accident occurred on a county bridge project about ten miles north of Diller. authorities reported no other injuries.

Obituary of De Wayne K Calkins Civil War Vet and Merchant

De Wayne K Calkins born April 22 1842 in Brownsville Jefferson County Kentucky moved to Stillman Valley Illinois at age nine. He served in the 34th Illinois Infantry in the Civil War was captured at Stone River and held in Libby Prison six months wounded at Resaca. He later lived in Wyoming Iowa Nebraska and Missouri working in mercantile business and serving as sheriff and state senator before moving to Diller and finally Blue Springs. He married Adelaide Aldred February 27 1866 and had eight children. He passed away after a long career as a merchant and public official.

F E Hale returned Sunday from a two day visit with his son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Walter Greenwood and family at Waverly. J W Sutton a former Diller business man died at his home in Douthat Oklahoma Thursday of last week. Roy Nelson who had visited here with his parents left yesterday for Washington DC where he has a clerical position in the income tax department.

Child Bitten on Lip by Snake in Field

Fay Diller six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Diller was bitten on the upper lip possibly by a bull snake while playing in the field Tuesday evening Dr Diehl arrived promptly and reports the child is progressing well.

Suit Over Sewer Outlet Damages In Diller

Mrs. Mary Green sues for 1500 in damages claiming property harm from a sewer outlet once privately owned and used by Diller citizens and the village. Defendants include A H Colman J Smith Geo Riddle E S Dunn Dr Claude Ellis Farmers Union Co-op Store and the Village of Diller. Attorneys Hartigan and Fouts. Answers due August 6. The village recently purchased the sewer system and adjoining land from private owners.
