Reasons for Cotton Seed Rot Breaks Point to Fungus

Ten years of study at the Greenville Texas United States cotton breeding field station show cotton root rot breaking up is not soil or crop related but tied to the fungus itself. This implies a window for soil disinfectants or planting nonsusceptible crops to reduce infection. Cotton root rot is widespread from Texas to the Pacific coast and into Old Mexico, cutting national cotton yields by 250000 to 600000 bales annually and causing about 50 million dollars in crop damages. Circular 178-C is available free from the U S Department of Agriculture.

Terraces Halt Erosion of Valuable Land

E. G. Johnson of the University of Illinois says five and a half million acres of cultivation suffer heavy erosion and soil loss that terraces could prevent. The Mangum terrace is a low ridge system built across slopes to capture runoff and guide it to the side outlet, preserving fields. Complete construction plans are available from county agents or the University of Illinois as bulletin 20 Saving Soils by Means of the Mangum Terrace.
