The Diller High School junior class drew a full house at their Friday Opera House showing of The Wild Oats Boy despite a measles epidemic. Three members were absent but the performance, aided by interludes and songs by eight girls, pleased the audience. Miss Mares led with Miss Grubb assisting.
Advance information from the Agricultural Agent indicates that all restrictions on excess wheat planted by 1934 Corn Hog contract signers will be removed. Agricultural Agent Andreas suggests signers with excess wheat avoid restricting its use until further notice, anticipating a likely small wheat crop this year.
Four farmers John Leaper Will Leaper Quinter Fry and Lawrence Madden north of town bought timber ten miles south of Diller on the Little Blue river. They cut and shaped wood into fuel posts tongues and other items producing about 250 ricks sold at 2.50 per rick totaling 640 dollars. They also produced 700 oak and walnut posts and machine tongues moved to Diller by truck.
Methodist and Congregational congregations join for Holy Week services on April 16 and 18. Tuesday at the Congregational church and Thursday at the Methodist church. Good Friday service at eight with Rev. Harry F. Huntington of Fairbury conducting Holy Communion in the Methodist church. Everyone is invited to attend.
Hiatt and Leonard Tieman were married in Marysville Kansas on February 2 1935. The ceremony surprised most relatives. Molly the youngest Hiatt daughter and Leonard only child of Geo Tieman Beatrice both graduated high school in 1932. They will live with his parents in Beatrice.
Pete Vandersee pleaded guilty to stealing the automobile of W. E. Anderson of Dilfer and was sentenced by Judge Mesmore to one year in the reformatory. Fred Vanboskirk and Bert Hamersham were held in Beatrice for trial in the same theft case.
The Diller Public School shuts for the week due to widespread measles absences. Thirty five of seventy in grades and twenty eight of seventy nine in high school are absent. The plan is to let recovering students miss time without losing too much.
Jefferson County Production Control Association prepares 1935 corn hog contract applications and listing sheets for state approval. Most farms with no changes will receive typed contracts for final signature before corn planting. Some changes since 1934 may delay a few days to weeks.
Waggoner and J F Sanman each broke 94 targets to tie for high honors at a registered trapshoot in Wymore last Sunday. Other scores included Bradley Young 91 James Stuart 91 R W Gaddis 90 C W Kellar 86 E Bigler 85 L Dettraff 5 James Welsh 84 K O Parrish 82 H H Wheeler 82 L Purry 80 I N Downs 75 Charles Stewart 75 William Van Marter 74 A F Mitchell 72 R E Michael 66. Dell and Velma Wehling appeared with instructor Mr. Billings of Beatrice on the YMCA Indoor Circus program in Lincoln last Thursday through Saturday. The prior week Dell and Velma, with Cleo Green as pianist, traveled to Washington Kansas to perform on two different shows.
Agricultural Agent W C Andreas advised local farmers to make hay purchases by the end of the month to lock in drought rates, noting there is no assurance the rate will continue after April 30 1935.
A survey shows only 58 percent of citizens over 21 voted in the 1932 presidential election and about 41 percent in the latest off year. Municipal elections mirror this pattern with low turnout. In a village election 109 of 255 possible votes were cast, and in School District No. 70 only 112 of 520 eligible voters voted, most living outside the town. Jefferson County farmers hear about growing soybeans at a county session organized by Agricultural Agent Andreas. P H Stewart or A Peterson of the College of Agriculture will speak as part of a southeast regional meeting held at Jansén on April 16.
The Diller Band presents two concerts at the Opera House next Wednesday April 17 at 8 o clock with the combined group followed by the advanced organization. Lucile Hansen directs specialties and M O Wood leads the band. A fund to uniform the band is being raised and may be presented for public approval Wednesday evening.
Mrs. Dialemma Jane Wright, wife of Col. J. B. Wright, longtime Big Horn Basin auctioneer, died at her Powell home Sunday March 31 1935 after several days of pneumonia. She was 75 and had lived in Powell since 1915. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church with six grandsons as pallbearers. She was born February 9 1860 in Corsicana Missouri and married J B Wright at Weeping Water Nebraska in 1876. She is survived by her husband four sons and two daughters. The article notes seven children born, one died in infancy.
