A wary prisoner recounts a murder case, the pocket book with three thousand dollars, and a courtroom twist that leads to a royal pardon just as the gallows loom. The tale ends with a confession overturning the conviction and a fatal reveal by the murdered man's brother.
A narrator recalls a chilling backwoods tale in which a stranger, wounded and near death, asks for a final wish. He begs concealment of the crime by burying his body secretly on the speaker’s land and leaving no trace to protect a cherished name. The survivor, torn by conscience, fulfills the dying man’s wish and buries him, concealing the grave beneath vines and leaves.
In a Sunday service Mr Hoff, seated behind the deaf Mr Callamore, brushed a spider from his head. A misdirected gesture escalated into a near clash before both men calmed as hymn book notes and apologies settled the incident. Separately, on a California ranch, wheat in a car was cut baked and eaten by seven in two hours.
The Ohio Democratic platform pledges national unity under the Constitution with strict construction and civil supremacy, advocates church state separation, equal rights, and local control, and denounces Republican policies. It calls for repealing the Resumption Act, restoring silver monetary power, retaining greenbacks, and limiting federal military involvement in elections and state affairs.
