Mysterious voices aboard the Niger haunt Captain Phillips
A deserter-turned-sailor recounts life aboard the Niger to Puget Sound. A feared captain and a troublesome English mate, Jack Chester, provoke supernatural rumors and staged exits. Chester fakes a near drowning to escape punishment, later revealing ventriloquism as the trick. The voyage ends in tragedy near Hilo, leaving survivors to Portland and San Francisco.
