Eye for an Eye by a Reluctant Captor in Apache Ordeal
In 1882 the prospector Mr. Rowe faced execution by Chiefs Victoria Nana and Geronimo in the Black Range of New Mexico. He stunned them by plucking out an eye and offering it to the leader, then replacing it to win his freedom as the eye passed hand to hand. The eye was a glass trinket Rowe kept. Also notes on artificial eggs making headlines in Washington with claims of a cheap, indistinguishable substitute.
