A long column warns of widespread food and drink adulteration including terra alba in confectionery and cream of tartar, plus tainted milk and meat. It also recounts crude jokes in Tokyo and a humorous legal anecdote among lawyers, with moral admonitions and various social notes.
Features of the so called Walled Lake in Wright county Iowa describe a two to three foot rise above ground, a stone dam with stones weighing three tons to 100 pounds, a woodland belt around the lake, and a 2,800 acre basin with water up to twenty five feet deep. The article notes an 1856 storm that breached the dam and asks where the water originates. It also covers a separate piece on food adulteration and a romantic tale of Napoleon Bonaparte’s prison life and a governor’s daughter.
