From the whaleboat battles and a daring chase in peril
A dramatic early saga recounts a whale attack on a lifeboat during a chase near a ship. Crews endure near disaster as the whale breaches, sinks one boat, and is finally killed after a second bold assault. The narrator, Cope Watkins, notes the whale yielded eighty five barrels of oil and marked the rogue’s end. The piece blends maritime peril with a second vignette about a quaint New England wedding and brief curiosities on famous brains and customs.
