In a remote chase across a balsam thicket Carson pursues a gambler and a trapper, shots fire and a young man dies. The trapper consoles the gambler, prays, and offers mercy. The gambler falls, and the trapper accepts the doomed man’s hand before he dies, while a girl in Montreal awaits the gambler’s bequest.
A magnetic clock invented by Daniel Crawbaugh of Milltown Cumberland County Pa is described as remarkable. The earths magnetism powers the pendulum with minimal friction and self regulates by alternately cutting and restoring magnetic connection to maintain oscillations. It has run continuously since March 1877 with slight variations per transit observations.
Instructions describe a bread method with four pounds flour, one quart milk, water, one ounce salt, and yeast. Mix to a thin batter, knead with rest periods, let dough rise, divide into one pound portions, shape into square rolls, proof, then bake in a hot oven for about ten minutes.
