President Harding formally opened the national unemployment conference in Washington. He called the Depression a war inheritance and urged liquidation, reorganization, readjustment, and reestablishment as the sure path to job creation, saying results would benefit the world beyond. He warned against any plan relying on public treasury funds.
London Sept 26 Prime Minister Lloyd George will send Britain’s government answer to Eamonn De Valera’s latest note on Wednesday. Also Topeka man Ted Goldsmith leaves for Kenyon College to study arts following family ties to Washburn College.
Democratic senators were summoned to a conference in Washington to discuss minority action on peace treaties with Germany Austria and Hungary. Leader Underwood of Alabama and ranking Democrat Hitchcock of Nebraska coordinated the call with Hitchcock favoring ratification. Underwood supported the treaties.
Donna Halvane, a Mt. Vernon mare, won the third and fourth heats of the 2:17 trot at Columbus Grand Circuit races on Saturday. The win paid out big sums for $2 bets, with investors in Columbus taking notice as Legal J and Fayette National split early heats and Dardanella faded in the free for all pace won by Hal Malone.
An automobile truck driven by Bixler of the Mount Vernon academy struck a boy riding a bicycle on West High Street Sunday afternoon. The boy escaped without a scratch, but the bicycle was badly damaged.

General Josif Pilsudski president of the Polish republic narrowly escaped assassination in Lemberg as he entered an automobile for a theatre. Three shots were fired. Count Grabowski was wounded in the leg. The would be assassin attempted suicide but was arrested.
David D. Hackney, golf professional, carded a record 34 for nine holes at Newark's Moundbuilders Country Club last week. Earl Yingling of Mt. Vernon witnessed the round with Cleveland pro Clark. He matched par on most holes but had two three-putts. The amateur record is 36 by George Hayden Jr.
Representatives of the Pennsylvania railroad presented a letter to the U S railroad labor board denying the board's right to enter the realm of management and stating the board could not discuss key points. The board accepted the letter and will issue a decision at a later date.
Sept 26 report states two people died and five were injured in a sequence of automobile accidents in Youngstown and nearby areas. Victims include Lucilla Hiwele, 8, and Mary Cash who died in hospitals after being struck by cars. One incident involved a girl stepping from a streetcar.
Governor Harry L. Davis urged Ohio to adopt the soldiers bonus measure, to be voted on November 8. He cited 16 states already approving such plans and noted a cost of about 34 cents per year for ten years per resident. Davis also endorsed international disarmament but warned against U S. defense cuts without parallel moves by other nations.
