Paris October report says American ambassador Myron T. Herrick went to his office shaken by yesterday’s home bombing but received congratulations from officials across Europe. He issued strict instructions requiring any presents to be opened at the embassy with all packages kept under surveillance and opened under police supervision.
Illinois miners withdraw their contribution to Alexander Howat's followers in the Kansas industrial court dispute. A letter to Thomas Harvey, provisional secretary treasurer of the Kansas district, requests the return of 43000 dollars from a 100000 dollar fund sent to Kansas miners about a year and a half ago.
Washington announced a narrowed field for the American minister to Germany after the Berlin treaty ratification. Representative A. B. Houghton of Corning New York is favored, with David Jayne being the alternate option. Officials expect the appointment to be the administration’s sole major diplomatic post.
Washington Oct. 20 The nomination of Charles H. Nauts of Toledo to be collector of Internal Revenue for the Tenth Ohio district was confirmed by the Senate yesterday after a delay due to Senator Willis of Ohio. Willis abandoned his opposition following a pact with President Harding on Ohio patronage.
Pittsburgh Oct 20 announces a fourth crude oil price increase this month by purchasing agencies. All grades rise 28 cents a barrel except Ragland, up 15 cents. Authorities say previous advances failed to stimulate production and drilling had not resumed.
Fredericktown D Oct 20 Marian Bradrick son of Frad Bradrick is in serious condition after a revolver discharged by George Herring at 6 PM. The bullet entered the left cheek and may threaten the brain. Dr. Ackerman reports X rays not yet developed. the boy remains at his father’s home.
Two crew members died when the steamer William H. Wolf burned opposite Marine City this morning. Captain J. P. Hanson of Detroit escaped by leaping to a small boat and suffered fractures to both legs.
Oberlin reports Sinclair Lewis author of Main Street was a student at the former Oberlin Academy about 18 years ago. Records list him as Harry Sinclair Lewis with a Saul's Center Minnesota home address, noting strong performance in languages and English literature studies.
In New York on October 20 an unemployed dog named Frankfurter fooled ten park keepers trying to trap him. They propped a soap box with a stick and long string. Frankfurter grabbed the string and pulled the trap to himself on the front table, calling out hot dog as he did.
N P Good, chairman of System Federation No 90, says Penn shop employes on the Pennsylvania lines will vote again on a strike. Both union and non union workers will ballot and the shop men will not strike until the result is known about the first of the month. If the union wins negotiations would be reopened. if rejected, members will act on their previously cast strike vote.
The 1921 Ohio farmers institutes will begin November 7 with statewide sessions planned. By now 352 sessions have occurred and about 175 more locally arranged meetings are expected. Openings occur in Amenville Athens Birmingham Hanging Rock Haverill and other counties as institutes aim to reach every county by spring with reads and rural credits as key topics. Approximately 315 thousand farm people attended last winter and participation is expected to rise in 1921 22.
The League to Enforce Peace elected A Lawrence Lowell president to succeed Chief Justice William H Taft. It also voted to hold a national convention in Washington as the armament conference adjourns amid invasion concerns.
News despatch reports that the Pennsylvania and Erie railroads advertised for workers in case of a strike. The Pennsylvania railroad seeks applicants to fill vacancies created by possible departures and the Erie railroad lists positions to be vacant by November 1 and offers permanent roles at standard wages.
Fred FB Counts, federal prohibition commissioner for Cleveland, will be removed within two weeks. J. R. Russell, Ohio director, announced the change and said a new successor is chosen but not named. The Cleveland office will see extensive personnel changes. Further reasons for Counts removal were not disclosed. Springfield events note the Clark County Historical Society receiving the first automobile engine from an historic on street display by Mrs. L B Russell.
Four thousand seven hundred stock shippers in 38 Ohio counties led September shipments, the largest totals on record. Reports show 694 loads totaling 44 982 hogs 1401 cattle 172 calves and 180 sheep weighing 10188 82 percent pounds, netting shippers 797 275 08 after costs. Pittsburgh received most traffic with Cleveland Cincinnati Toledo Buffalo and Huntington as other outlets.
Yale will confer Doctor of Laws on Marshal Foch at a special convocation of Fellows on November 12 in New Haven. The announcement came from the university secretary’s office today.
The 112th Ohio Masons communication closed with officer installations. John R. Flotron of Dayton becomes grand master. F M Ransbottom of Zanesville is deputy grand master. Harry S. Johnson of Cincinnati becomes deputy grand master. Campbell M. Voorhees of Columbus moves to senior grand warden. 163477 members will contribute 1 for Masonic home maintenance.
The Associated Press reports Knox County paid just 50 dollars in Crabbe act fines for prohibition violations in the year ending October 1, 1921. State auditor Joseph Tracy notes total fines across Ohio were split, with counties and local subdivisions sharing half of what was imposed. Mahoning County leads with 45782.01 dollars.
Gallipolis reports police fear foul play in the disappearance of Miss Thelma Poland, 16, a Richmond society and college girl visiting Point Pleasant, West Virginia. She vanished four days ago and her mother remains in a critical condition due to the worry.
The Interstate Commerce Commission, in pending cases on reduced freight rates for grain hay feed and lumber, was expected to issue a decision after a conference on the railroad situation. President Harding, Chairman McChord, and Attorney General Goff participated. a rate reduction outcome was not indicated.
