Washington May 1 The War Department asked Congress for a large aviation dollar appropriation to boost aircraft production. The request would add to the existing 610 million dollars already allocated and spent. Major General March and other officers presented the estimate to the House Military Committee. Additional appropriations were urged for the Quartermaster and Ordnance departments, totaling several billions for the army budget.
President Wilson ordered a Justice Department probe into graft in aircraft production funds tied to designer Gaison Gordon. The inquiry also targets pre German fashion clues and comes after Senate calls for a criminal investigation. Howard Collin, ex aircraft board chair, said he urged the move to protect reputations amid the charges. Patriotism and local pride push war savings stamp purchases.

In East Mayo at Bulla Bhaderoen Dillon appealed for unity to defeat conscription. John Wilson and Professor De Valorat spoke to about 16 000 attending. Dillon urged friendly cooperation across Ireland and warned the government might split over the issue. He stated only a united Ireland could resist conscription.
Washington May 6 By a margin of one vote a motion to proceed next Friday to consider the house woman suffrage resolution to the constitution was defeated in the Senate today. The vote was 40 to 21, just short of the necessary two thirds. Optimistic thought, Wrongs should be redressed without compulsion.
The Shipping Board announced that in the week ending May 5 ten steel ships totaling 57 895 tons and six wooden ships of 21 500 tons were launched by American yards. Twelve steel ships totaling 80 180 tons were delivered to the board during the same period.
German editors condemn the Collinsville lynching of Robert P. Prager and call Berlin to pressure Washington. The Zeitung Am Mittag argues Germany should threaten reprisals against American prisoners to deter anti German mob justice in the United States.

Australians hammered the Germans west and southwest of Morlancourt along a 2,000 yard front near the Ancre and Somme rivers. They pushed the line about 500 yards, repulsed strong resistance, took over 150 prisoners, while suffering only light losses.
Moscow April 28 report by The Associated Press says Japanese consul Uyeda denies Russia frontier fears. He asserts Japan is not mobilizing or strengthening positions in Siberia and that rumors of new guns and troop movements in Vladivostok are unfounded.
G. W. D., a famed race horse from Clinton county, died in Wilmington near Sabina the same day as its owner William Gordon. The horse was one of several famous trotters associated with the local racing scene, reflecting a notable era in area horse racing history.
