An American destroyer off Ireland found a submarine shelling lifeboats from two sunken ships, rescuing 20 survivors. The Lynton from Pensacola and Madura from Mobile were sunk. two perished and seven wounded from the Madura incident.
Paris reports the ministry of marine announced that American warships have anchored off the French coast. The French navy greets with joy the arrival of these new brothers in arms who under the flag of the American republic will participate until final victory in the struggle against the common enemy.
Petrograd on June 7 reports the Kronstadt Incident closed. The focal committee of soldiers and workmen delegates has received authority from the provisional government and will govern.
The American steamship Silver Shell engaged a German submarine in the Mediterranean on May 30, exchanging 60 shots before the submarine disappeared. Commanded by Captain Charlton, the 5,605 ton vessel sailed from America with 43 crew, including 18 Americans, and was described by the Paris ministry of marine and the state department confirming the engagement.
General Haig launches a major push along a nine mile front on the Messines Ridge between Ypres and Lille. British forces seize Messines Ridge and other small towns while progress is described as satisfactory. French front remains quiet with a German attack repelled near St Quen tin.
A two cent tax on all bank checks and drafts over five dollars was added to the war tax bill by the senate finance committee. The measure is projected to raise about 1.5 million dollars in revenue. The committee also removed all house taxes on dues of social athletic and sporting clubs, which would have yielded around 10 million dollars.
While Viscount Grey fished in Scotland, Falloden Hall in Northumberland burned. Most of his pictures books and heirlooms were saved, with only a portion of the residence damaged. The incident prompted inquiries into the blaze and its cause remains unclear.
Governor Cox announced the appointment of H. B. Riddle to the state board of administration. Riddle, a Columbus Republican and Ohio State University engineering graduate, is chosen amid active construction duties including work on a new penitentiary at the London farm.
The provost general's office said boards will be appointed for about every 30 000 people to review exemption claims. Each federal district will have at least ten boards for appeals from local boards, with final regulations yet to be issued by the president.

Smith oversee the sale under United States Judge Hollister’s order to satisfy creditors. The main Toledo to Cincinnati line goes to auction Friday in Dayton.
Six additional assistants were appointed by State Oil Inspector Charles Resch. New deputies include James M. Fletcher Xenia Charles McDermott Mansfield George L. Sherwood Ashley John W. Holden New Lexington R. B. Brown Spencer and James M. Milar New Philadelphia. All effective June 16 or July 1.
Ohio registration totals reach 533 201 with seven counties missing official returns. Final state total expected to exceed 650 000 as Cuya hoga and Hamilton counties complete reports and nonresident registrations are added. Sixty seven counties show 260 439 total and 178 009 exemptions, about 68 percent.
Anilly states final figures may be delayed by two or three days before registration headquarters updates. The note implies ongoing tallying and awaiting official totals.

Lorenzo Sepulveda director general of public charity orders all institutions under his charge to cultivate lands suitable for agriculture. Products must be devoted to supporting the institutions. An analysis notes starfish contains about 6 percent nitrogen and some phosphorate acid.
Two autos parked along the south side of the public square were dented when Bert Kemp of Danville sideswiped them while turning from Mary Street. The Easterday car received a radiator dent and fender dent. Frank Banterday’s and Frank Hall’s cars suffered greater body damage. Kemp’s car was undamaged.
Mayor C A Mitchall joined the Red Cross membership drive in Mt Vernon by subscribing five dollars for himself and five dollars for Mrs Mitchell. He also bought eight one dollar memberships for children unable to subscribe. J B McCrackin of the local Red Cross secured the first subscriptions following the mayor's pledge.
