The United States and Japan remain far from resolution after a half hour State Department conference. Secretary Bryan and the Japanese ambassador declined to discuss the note or contents, with no clear progress toward settlement of the California alien land law dispute.
Governor Cox attends Lorain centennial festivities marking Commodore Perry's victory and the 100 years of peace with Britain. A lake liner launch and remarks accompany the event on the riverfront with the governor in attendance.
Urgent appeals for food and help reached Marietta authorities from residents along Duck Creek. A carload of provisions was dispatched to Lowell and sent by wagon into the wooded channel region. Hundreds of people are homeless in the Duck Creek valley.
Lima July 11. A 17 year old runaway from Bucyrus Margaret Bacorn planned a meeting with 24 year old Robert Dinsmore also of Bucyrus. Dinsmore kissed her as he stepped from the train and police sent Bacorn back to Bucyrus.
Two high school boys Louis Koenig and Nathan Koachelle, both 17, pleaded guilty to burglary and robbery after saying they sought money for college by crime. They wore masks, carried revolvers, and stole 2200 dollars in gold filings from Benjamin Frieman. They planned to imitate detective stories to become top crooks.
In Bellefontaine on July 17 a gold chain trapped on Dwight Goodbeart six, and as the chain sank into his flesh his face darkened. His grandmother Mrs. Jennie Goodbeart grabbed a butcher knife and cut into the back of his neck to sever the chain and save his life.
Cincinnati reports Fred Koenig, 21, was murdered in Munich, Germany, several days ago. His father, John Koenig, manager of a local brewing company, says the tragedy is believed to be the work of robbers. The notice notes no crowds and sunny weather.
Cincinnati garbage is not being collected due to a strike by 125 drivers employed by the Union Reduction company which recently took over the Cincinnati Reduction contract. The workers demand a weekly pay raise from 10 to 13 dollars.
George Cox, former Republican leader in Cincinnati, was discharged for the second time on charges tied to alleged illegal loans by the Cincinnati Trust Company to the Ford & Johnson Chair Company. Cox had been president of both institutions.
In Manesville on July 17 a street car used as a repair vehicle on the Ohio Electric railway failed to negotiate a sharp curve and rolled 20 feet down an embankment. Four persons sustained minor injuries. In Barheaville on the same date Miss Rebecca Fred, 55, living with her brother in law G E Hilles, a drug rack, was found dead in a residence basement from inhaling gas via a rubber tube in her mouth.
Washington reports detail claims that the National Association of Manufacturers sought to control Congress and shape policy by opposing legislation and placing a member in the cabinet. Witnesses described funds of 500000 to 700000 dollars yearly and named figures including Roosevelt Taft Sherman Ulrich Hemenway Foraker Cole Vorys and Hitchcock. Records presented included books and papers from the association and industrial defense council as the committee prepared further inquiries.
Wheat No 2 red new at 86 cents per bushel. Corn No 2 at 61 cents. Oats No 2 at 44 cents. Cattle 14,000 head, hogs 31,000, sheep and lambs 20,000. Prices listed for steers stockers and feeders cows and bulls mixed cattle along with regional market notes. Cleveland reports market activity and prices for livestock and grain in the vicinity.
