A large crowd witnessed the solemn laying of the corner stone for the new St. Vincent de Paul Catholic church in Mt. Vernon on Sunday afternoon. Visiting clergy and parishioners from Knox and nearby counties attended despite heat. An inscription appeared on the stone amid the ceremony.
A stone setting at St Vincent de Pauls Church included copper box histories and parish memorabilia. Bishop Hartley delivered a ceremonial address praising faith, conscience, and salvation as central to Catholic teachings while flags and a charity dinner accompanied the event.
A large crowd gathered for the church cornerstone ceremony on a July day. Parochial procession accompanied by Bishop Hartley and visiting priests lined Hast High Street and West streets. Clergy from Newark Columbus and Danville participated, with the event marked by formal rites and impressive stone presentation.

President Harding submits a two phase settlement to coal operators and miners. An arbitration board of three miners, three operators, and five public representatives would set a new wage scale by August 10 or extend the April 1 level to 1923 if no agreement is reached. Government aims to present the plan to reconvened sides after talks broke up without agreement.
President Harding and Attorney General Daugherty conferred at the White House last night on federal measures to end the railroad strike. No statement followed but it was understood executive sanction was given to instructions to use force to prevent disruption of interstate commerce and mail movement.
Police in Columbus found Evan R. Jones 65 and Mrs. Alice Burns dead in a West Broad street house. Jones was shot through the head and Burns through the heart. Investigators believe Burns killed Jones then herself after neighbors failed to raise her.
More than half of county and state fairs will stage horseshoe pitching tournaments as part of their activities. The national tournament is set for Des Moines from Aug 28 to Sept 1, drawing top pitchers nationwide. A joint session of the National League of Horseshoe and Qualt and the National Horseshoes Pitchers' Association plans to merge into a single organization.
The government will appoint U S marshals to maintain law and order including mail transport and interstate commerce during the railway shopmen strike. Attorney General Daugherty announced after a conference with President Harding that deputy marshals have been authorized in the Midwest where disorders occurred and the policy will be continued where justified.
Ohio ranks third among states in onion acreage for the year, with about six thousand five hundred thirty acres planted. New York leads with 7 630 acres, California second with 7 800, and Ohio shows a 28 percent increase over 1921, per the Market News bulletin from the state department of agriculture.

Chicago July 10 Mina Mathilde McCormick left for New York and was expected to be a guest of her grandfather John D Rockefeller for several weeks before possibly sailing for Europe. Reports said Harold McCormick might visit New York and sail for Europe with his daughter.

Judge Calvin H. Wood of Mt Gilead Ohio sets aside embezzlement verdict in Ohio vs C B Carpenter and finds the defendant not guilty in the Blue Sky securities case. He notes the decision hinges on applying law to admitted facts rather than jury verdicts. Proceedings involve Knox Tire and Rubber official C B Carpenter and venue from Knox to Morrow County.
The City of Auskings announces a committee to organize the bandstand and flag star dedication in the public square park. Members include Service Director Charles Phillips Mayor Charles Keigley Thomas E Auskings chamber of commerce president Frank J Beam American Legion representative Lawrence Sperry and Chas C Tams and 8 J Dorgan from the press. The group will meet after city council to plan the July 14 ceremony featuring a military flag lowering and taps by American Legion members.
A four member special committee was appointed Sunday by FH and MacAyla to investigate alleged cruelty to inmates at the Lancaster boys' industrial school. The start of the inquiry occurred in Columbus on July 10.
