The Tuscania disaster is revised to 101 missing and presumed dead, mostly crew, as British convoys close in and rush patrol boats to aid Wisconsin and Michigan troops. Survivors recount two torpedo hits and crews’ brave conduct amid efforts to rescue.
In Londonderry Ireland on February 7 a submarine that torpedoed the Tuscania was attacked by a destroyer. An American officer indicated the submarine may have been destroyed in the engagement.
Press notes Ohio officers fear many draft troops aboard the Tuscania may be connected to transfers from Camp Grant and Camp Kelly. About 150 men recently sent to Camp Grant to join the 20th Engineers, with several hundred more to Camp Kelly, contributing to the ship’s personnel.
The Cunard liner Aurana, 400 tons, was torpedoed by a German submarine within 48 hours while bound for the United States. Officials say the ship was not sunk and is making her way back to port carrying little cargo.
Ohio Weather Bureau warned of a warming trend from tonight through Tuesday that could thaw snow and flood rivers. The warning noted the potential for a large amount of water as ice and snow melt, affecting housing and war industries.
