Whitelaw Reid rose from humble origins in Xenia Ohio to a storied career as journalist scholar and diplomat. Born October 27 1837 he became editor of the Xenia News and Ganette of Cincinnati and later served as American ambassador to the court of St James at the start of Theodore Roosevelt’s second term in 1905.

Death of Ambassador Whitelaw Reid shocks Taft and George V
Washington December 16 government officials and Yale professors were stunned by the ambassador’s death. President Taft learned of the loss before church and a cablegram from King George expressed deep sorrow and condolence. The Queen also extended sympathy for Reid’s longtime friendship with the king. Separately, aviator Glenn Martin was injured after his hydroplane crashed near San Pedro while searching for missing Horace Kearney and Chester Lawrence.

Fredericktown girl attempts suicide by bichloride poison
Goldie Spicer aged about 18 of Fredericktown Ohio took two spoonfuls of bichloride of mercury early Monday in an apparent attempt at self harm. Antidotes were given by a physician and she survived. Her motive remains unclear though she had expressed anger at someone. She had been living with Calvin and Mrs Smith after the deaths of her parents.
