Mt Vernon Milk Plant Showcases Pasteurized Supply
Mt Vernon hosts the Jewell Ice Cream and Milk Co plant at 9 North Sandusky Street. It employs 16, runs four wagons and a truck, and markets about a quarter of its output outside the city. Milk comes from 36 nearby farms, is pasteurized at 145 degrees for 30 minutes, then cooled to 38 degrees before bottling in sterile conditions. Ice cream is pasteurized, emulsified, frozen with calcium chloride brine, and aged to hardness before sale.
