Washington April 28 The first postmaster nominations by President Harding were sent to the Senate. The list includes 84 names who scored highest in competitive civil service exams, with veterans preference honored where applicable. Leaders expect quick confirmation as nominees meet civil service and party district requirements.
The Atlantic fleet, over sixty ships led by the Pennsylvania, returns to home waters at Hampton Roads after a southern drill. President Harding reviews the fleet aboard the Mayflower with Secretary Denby aboard, as the battle line salutes and gunfire roars in a ceremonial ceremony marking a peak in naval display.
Governor Harding of the Federal Reserve Board announced a personal survey of farm credit in the middle west and southwest starting next week. He will tour farming districts to learn farmers and bankers concerns and will visit the Chicago Fed district. The board has no direct relief plans and will only rediscount member bank loans.
Washington April 38 Sir Auckland Geddes British ambassador conferred with Secretary Hughes today as the Belga ambassador arrived, the first allied envoys to see Hughes since he outlined new German reparations proposals. Prince de Chalais of the French embassy planned a daytime visit.
Four men convicted of waging war against the British crown were executed by firing squad at the military barracks in Conn, Ireland. The condemned were Patrick O Sullivan Maurice Moore Patrick Romayne and Thome Mulcahy. This brings the total executed here in recent months to eleven. Earlier February executions followed by Cork killings and wounding of soldiers are noted.
Cleveland will build a modern Italian Renaissance public hall in the downtown area costing nearly 6 million dollars. The 13 500 seat auditorium will include 75 000 square feet for exhibits, modern ventilation, telegraph, restrooms, and a 10 010 pipe organ. The building, part of the city’s Group Plan, aims to make Cleveland a leading convention city.
Berlin dispatch reports that nine hundred Germans sought for wartime crimes by the Entente will be tried in Paris beginning May 23. Beven judges will sit as the court, with the nine hundred defendants facing the proceedings.
Columbus April 28 definite announcement of the rumored merger of the Ohio State and Ohio Bell telephone companies expected late today after a directors meeting. If approved the plan will be sent to stockholders for confirmation.
Trustees of Ohio University propose a bureau of business research as an adjunct to the college of commerce and journalism to aid state business. Dean Hagerty notes Harvard model, aims to study Ohio conditions and publish cost data for about 400 business men with cooperation from chambers of commerce and merchants.
Columbus April 23 Associe and Prear report from Ohio State University agricultural extension service shows some apple varieties escaped frost largely while others suffered heavy injury. Rome Beauty Yellow Transparent Grimes Golden Winesap Northern Spy fared better. Baldwins Ben Davis Delicious Greenings and most summer and fall varieties were badly hurt.
Miss Mary McNeely a star witness in the James McCaffrey perjury trial testified she lied in court this morning at the request of Judge McGannon during the murder trial of Harold Kagy. The testimony centers on the judge being on trial for the same murder case, affecting the perjury proceedings in Cleveland.
Ohio chiropractors prepare for a seventh annual meeting in Columbus on May 11 to press for separate recognition by the general assembly. More than 400 practitioners are expected as Dr. D A Williams of Ashtabula leads the program with addresses by Dr. Paul il Strand of Youngstown Dr. George Lunby of Akron and R Jonne of Indianapolis and California reformer Dr. Lucille Webber of San Francisco will discuss the fight for separate rehabilitation.

Seven schoolchildren were seriously injured when a bus carrying 56 passengers was struck by a Valley traction car at Rogers Crossing, near Columbus. The bus stalled on the track and collided with the car, throwing children to the ground and into an electric third rail. Among the serious injuries are Mary Lambert, 14. Mildred Judy, 11. Esther Judy, 8. Luella Judy, 14. Florence Judy, 8. Irma Yeager, 12. Barton Yoager, 16.
Herbert P. Crane Jr., son of a millionaire, was found guilty by a jury of assaulting two young girls in Lincoln Park. He was released on bond pending a motion for a new trial after parents filed complaints. The girls identified him at the trial as their attacker.
Ohio public utilities commission is asked to authorize 1920s new securities totaling 222.9 million for extensions and improvements. Indications suggest nearly 500 million dollars may be needed in 1921 to meet service demands. Physical valuations by the commission covered gas, telephone, electric, heating, and water utilities.
Representative Fish introduced a resolution in Washington calling for immediate withdrawal of American occupation forces from Germany upon approval of the Knox measure. The sponsor argued passage of Knox would not automatically fund or guarantee repayment of guarantees or reimbursements arising from the action.
