Smithville Hit by March Gale Collapses Building

The Hartzler Shisler building on Smithville's main intersection suffered a second collapse in two months as a March gale drove the north wall on the third story into the roof of the Smithville bank. Debris left the bank closed with over 3000 dollars in damage. Cleaning began, and plans for a temporary exchange at the fire hall were made.

Don and King Win Special Red Cross Award

Don and King the educated Great Danes owned by Dr L L DeArment received a Special Certificate of Award for Outstanding Services from Rev Clas-Hoot chairing the Red Cross war relief fund. The pair raised 264.50 for the Red Cross, the only certificate awarded in Wayne county. Total contributions from Dalton and Sugar Creek township reach 502.20. Solicitors listed include Mrs D P Stahl and others. deductions show 15.63 tax from 264.50.

Dalton Community Club Meeting At Presbyterian Church

John Moser of West Main Street received a patent for a heat saving device fitting stoves or furnaces. The device recovers heat wasted through chimneys and has been used in several homes nearby for years. Moser reports strong manufacturer interest in licensing or production on royalty terms.

Blackout Follows Barn Roof Loss In Gale Near Kidron

A heavy Monday morning gale tore a metal roof from David Welty’s barn south of Kidron, and the debris fell across high tension lines. The resulting short burned out the circuit, plunging Kidron and several homes into darkness during breakfast.

Death Follows Stroke For John H. Eschliman at 76

John H. Eschliman, 76, died at his home one mile north of this place at 7:30 a m Sunday from a stroke suffered earlier that morning. Born near North Lawrence he moved here in 1904. Survived by wife Amelia four sons Ray of South Dakota William of Dalton John C of Youngstown Samuel of Canfield two daughters Nora of Wooster Irene at home three grandchildren sister Miss Mary Eschliman of North Lawrence and brothers Jonas Canton Ezra North Lawrence and Dan North Lawrence. Services were held Wednesday at Pleasant View Mennonite church with Bishop A J Steiner and Rev Wm Detweiler officiating burial in church cemetery.

Dedicates Chancel as Memorial for Dr Hubbell in Cleveland

The chancel of the Second United Presbyterian church in Cleveland Ohio has been remodeled as a memorial to the late Dr W H Hubbell The dedicatory service will be held on March 15 with Dr H al Rose Superintendent of Missions delivering the address.

Ohio Declares Conservation Month and Arbor Day Proclamation

Gov. John W. Bricker issued a proclamation designating April as Conservation Month. The week of April 6 to 10 is Conservation Week in Ohio schools and April 10 is Arbor Day and Bird Day with a state wide observance by all citizens.
