Ronnie Houghton of Dalton wins the Wayne County Soap Box Derby title after years of effort. Edgerton Drug sponsors him as he prepares for Akron Derby Day with hometown backing hoped to send a large contingent to cheer him on.
In Akron preparations loom for Derby Day as Ronnie Houghton’s victory remains unreported in the latest issue. Rotary talk by Albert Bichsel of Deioma Trucking Co. notes tractor trailer costs and taxes, while Forty-one women form three new Mary Circle groups at the Methodist church with plans for the year Our Methodist Heritage and History.

Services for Susie Buchwalter 88 will be Friday July 13 at 2 30 pm from the Monbarren Funeral Home. She died July 10 after a short illness at Dunlap Hospital. Survived by daughter Mabel Wenger and son Ellis, five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Burial in Dalton Cemetery with Rev. Harry Klee officiating. The Nazir Grotto 50 piece band led by conductor Charles E Lotz of Dalton will present a free concert at Myers Lake Moonlight Gardens on July 18. Soloists include Lawrence Kehl and Lois Larrabee with Barbarettes Janice Grim Kathleen Berg Hazel Jean Douglas and Katherine Biggs. The Dalton Equestrians held a Monday night meeting at Margaret Lustig’s home with 26 members. Demos covered hoof trimming handling ponies cleaning and oiling hooves and a cloverleaf display. A pony ride concession was approved for the July 11 Dalton street carnival. Next meeting at Laura Shankleton’s home features Roberta Leopold and Laura Shankleton demonstrations.

The Dalton Village Council passed the leash law ordinance for animal control. Clerk Tom Woodruff and councilman Roy Saurer resigned, with Clarence A. Gonter appointed to fill the clerk’s unexpired term. The council adopted the budget and approved painting the Town Hall.

Corrine Rae Kurzen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Kurzen of Dalton, RD, finished nurse training at Jefferson Medical College and Hospital in Philadelphia. She will take more courses and pursue her profession as graduation exercises on Sept 8. She held roles as house president student council yearbook editor and nurses basketball team captain. She also served as judiciary council representative in year two and freshman year. A Dalton High School 1959 graduate, she attends the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Orrville.
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church will move from 3081 Lincoln Way W Massillon to North Elementary School on Route 98 north of Route 30 on October 7. The move prepares for a chapel and Church School wing as first unit of a future complete building to be developed across from the State Highway Patrol Barracks.
The class of 1937 at Dalton High and their families will hold their 28th reunion on Sunday July 22 at Badoja Farm. Swimming and fishing begin at 2:00 p m with a picnic supper at 5:00. Beverage will be furnished.
