The Wayne County Red Cross begins a wartime drive on March 1 to fund relief efforts. Dalton district aims 1025 dollars of a 45000 county goal, with volunteers handling all tasks while a single paid worker serves as executive secretary.
Sugar Creek township organizes a drive through the former school districts with committees to be appointed. A list of committees will appear in the next Gazette.
The Red Cross plans its largest fund drive yet starting March 1 amid scarce paper ink and wartime labor. Chapter leaders will quietly solicit donations with leftovers and minimal publicity as the civilian army aids global war relief for servicemen and dependents.

Allen L Arnold died Sunday afternoon at about 3 o clock after a period of improved health. He would have been 86 on March 11. A Wayne County native, he farmed near Dalton for fifty years before retiring to the town. Survived by three sons, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and three sisters. Funeral held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the family home with Rev. R. G. Pinkerton officiating. Burial in Dalton cemetery.
J W Jack Criswell longtime Massillon resident died at Massillon City hospital after a paralytic stroke Friday while traveling with Two-Supt Ott near the State Highway Barracks. Funeral was Tuesday at 3 p m in Stockham funeral home with Rev Robert G Turnbull of the Methodist church officiating burial in Dalton cemetery.
The funeral for James C. Scott 80 of Fredericksburg who died February 16 1943 was conducted at his home by Rev C L Roe. Burial followed at East Side cemetery. He leaves wife Ellen Stauffer Scott one son six daughters including Mrs Reva Hershey and 17 grandchildren. Local attendees included Mr and Mrs Morris Hershey Mr and Mrs Chas Wecht Mr and Mrs Raymond Wecht Mr and Mrs Harvey Eckard Mr and Mrs Raymond Brenner of East Greenville and Mr and Mrs Paul Crone of Massillon.
Funeral services were held last Thursday in the First Methodist church Canton for the Rev Matrona A Burris 69 a former Methodist pastor in Dalton He directed religious education at Ohio Northern University Ada and was a Harvard graduate He died at his home in Columbia Station Berea Ohio
Funeral services for Mrs. Etta Jane Evans of Massillon were conducted Sunday at the Arnold-Lynch funeral home with burial planned for Rose Hill Memorial Park Monday. Mrs. Evans was a sister of Mrs. Glenn Kosier of this place.

Chas Bach inducted into Army last Saturday. Lester Ickes on Tuesday. Carl E Brown and Loyal Santmyer rejected for physical defects. Mark Kentfield US Marine, formerly of Dalton, visited friends last Wednesday. Kentfield wounded on Guadalcanal, home on 15 day leave with a bullet still in leg.
Town hall gathers all interested for an advanced First Aid Course at 7 30 EWT Tuesday evening. Firemen attend the course and Standard Certificates are invited. A Standard course will also be offered at the high school on Thursday nights starting February 25 at 7 30 EWT. High school seniors 17 and older are eligible.
The First National Bank will continue to operate on Eastern War Time with hours from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM until further notice.
Mrs F O Marty spent days in Millersburg. Mrs Chester Myers improving at Cleveland Clinic for observation and treatment. Mrs Norman Berg returned home from Camp Maxey Texas visiting husband. Albert Philabaum and Mr and Mrs Charles Denner of Alliance attended J W Criswell funeral here. Born to Mr and Mrs Robert Hodge a son at Beeson hospital Wooster Jeanne Longworth. 215 applicants for Ration Book No 2 at Dalton High School Tuesday and 800 books issued.
As the legislature adopts slow time and clocks set back one hour Sunday morning, Dalton lags with fast time in effect. The Post Office uses Eastern War time and the Greyhound schedule First National Bank and schools follow the last time. Churches adjust service hours per their notices.
Miss Ruth Baer daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Baer of Marshallville and Pvt Lewis Beech son of Mr and Mrs John Beech were married Thursday February 18 at the Evangelical church in Marshallville Rev Carmony officiated. The groom a Dalton high school graduate was home on furlough from Camp Pendleton Virginia. The bride also a Dalton graduate will reside with her parents.
Official thermometer readings show a high of 62 degrees on Tuesday February 23 and a low of minus 2 degrees on Thursday February 18 for the week ending February 24 1943. Data recorded at Dalton High School.
The Blue Star Service Club thanks the Christ Graber family for kindness to the lunch sellers at the Graber home sale last Saturday and for a $10 donation. Gratitude goes to all who contributed food or money and to those who sold the goodies. Proceeds, including pans soup containers and dishes, may be called for at the J N Moser home.
David W. Zaugg expresses gratitude to the Philathea Bar raca and T. N. T. Sunday school classes of Christ's Evangelical and Reformed church Sugar Creek Grange and Mrs. L. E Sommer for plants and good eats and to everyone who visited or sent cards during illness.
Miss Arlene Thompson placed second in the Prince of Peace speech contest held in Smithville on Sunday morning, missing by three points. Fort McClellan Alabama hosted visits from Lieut and Mrs. Robert Slusser and son Jeffrey while Bucyrus and Massillon residents joined D L Zuercher and family in East Greenville, where a fire gutted the two story home of Harry Miller. The Victory Loan drive collected $15,000 over the target, earning the ten volunteers engraved certificates from the Fourth Federal Reserve District committee in Cleveland.
