Ed Coy lynching following alleged rape near Texarkana

A mob captured Ed Coy on the 20th near Texarkana Arkansas tied him to a tree and burned him alive. The atrocity drew about 5000 witnesses while Coy maintained his innocence to the end. The report appears amid a broader 19th century news roundup.

Democratic State Committee Debates Early Convention

At Altany New York on February 22 the Democratic state committee met amid contests in three districts. The protest against an early convention was admitted but then laid on the table. Gen Daniel E Sickles was chosen as permanent chairman and the delegation backed Senator Hill for the national ticket. A separate antHill conference organized in Union Hall to oppose the early convention.

Bold and daring robbery wounding messenger at Lyons

Daniel T. McInerney, a messenger for the American Express Company, was shot three times during a train robbery near Lyons New York. After a chaotic pursuit involving a masked robber aboard a two car express, he was found wounded but alive. Perry, wanted for a Utica express robbery, was captured by police near Blue Cut after hijacking a farmer's horse and sleigh. A $1,000 reward is offered.
