Attorney Ferris details strikers’ movements, describes the sheriff amid attack, and contends acquittal for Martin and his deputies. Witnesses recount clashes, threats, and stones and clubs used by strikers.
Report from New York February 22 describes Seguranca passengers witnessing Havana excitement after the Maine explosion. Observers note Spanish officials and civilians showed little remorse while Cuban mourners wore black, and Americans reported hostile jeers and stones. Passengers planned to testify in Washington.
Forest fires rage across a dozen counties in the state with Richland county sustaining heavy damage. Alexander W. Seegers a farmer, and his driver were fatally burned along with two enslaved women. numerous cattle perished as flames crossed rivers and plowed ground leaving more than a million acres burned.

Senate debates include gas trustee salaries, real estate prohibitions, and child labor rules. Washington’s birthday adjournment noted with several bills introduced and conference votes reconsidered.
