Tractors Tragedy Claims Wenger On Smithville Farm

Ward Samuel Wenger 24 well known in the Dalton area died when the tractor he operated slid over a snow concealed bank at the Ramseyer farm near Smithville. The machine toppled fifteen feet into a creek pinning him beneath it. Funeral services were held at Martin Mennonite church with about 1000 in attendance. He was born November 9 1916 in Sugar Creek Township and leaves a father a stepmother three sisters a brother and many relatives. He was baptized May 8 1937 into Chestnut Ridge Mennonite church and remained active until death.

Glenn Douglas of Marshallville, formerly Dalton, was appointed Saturday as the fifth member of the Wayne County Board of Education, succeeding Ivan Steiner Sr. Douglas also serves as president of the Baughman Township Board of Education. The town observed a Washington birthday holiday with the First National Bank closed all day Saturday February 22. Local families visited relatives in Cuyahoga Falls and Dalton Bulldogs basketball split a county tourney game 40 to 20. A new store and a garage drew crowds, and students went to Muskingum College to see Heidelberg. Winter weather disrupted travel with near zero temperatures and icy streets. A birthday surprise party for Mrs. Russell Hasseman occurred with 16 guests. Rev Brown returned home from Massillon hospital much improved. A plumbing shop burglary left tracks in snow and roofing materials missing with no clues.

Mrs Mary Erwin Dies in Dalton After Brief Illness

Mrs Mary Erwin 63 widow of Barr Erwin died Monday evening at her Dalton home after a brief illness. She leaves one sister Elizabeth Herriot Barberton, one stepdaughter Bessie Cromer Toledo, and seven grandchildren Roy James Paul Gerald Roger Grace Shelva Jeanne Bonewit Orrville. A Dalton Presbyterian member, funeral services are Thursday at 2 0 in Stockham Funeral Home officiated by Rev R G Pinkerton, with burial in Dalton Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday evening.
