Senate and House conduct extensive debate on the bill to abolish the Volunteer Navy, review the Indian Appropriation bill funding 4.7 million dollars, and consider transfer of the Indian Bureau to the War Department amid other fiscal and military measures.
Cart. Paul Boyton entered the Allegheny River at Oil City on the morning of the 6th wearing his life preserving suit and arrived at his destination.
At a Salt Lake meeting the Anti-Polygamy Society adopted a memorial urging Congress to amend the anti polygamy act so general reputation of marital relations would prove marriage and living together in polygamy to be an offense. The group argues Mormon promises of amnesty are unreliable and calls for prosecuting officers to be empowered to pursue offenders.
Reports indicate four men including the Captain and mate were saved from the British ship Van Diemin. The German minister at Copenhagen was not recalled as previously claimed. Baron Magnus is nominated as successor to the post.
The Potter Committee met in secret on February 11 in Washington and a majority reportedly did not plan to call witnesses at that time. Republicans favored adding one or two witnesses, with Woolley named as a potential New York witness to be summoned.
