Ex governor Horatio Seymour of New York died last evening at his Deerfield home near Utica after a period of declining health. He passed quietly with doctors reporting no pain, and his illness followed a rapid decline that included bilious trouble and exhaustion. Born May 28 1810 in Franklin County, he served as NY governor, led Democratic conventions, and advised across eras, with a career highlighted by military service, legislative roles, the 1868 convention, and state leadership. His death follows a lifelong public career marked by strong views on secession and liquor laws, and he leaves a family and political circle in mourning.
Frank J. Bowman of St. Louis, staying at Willard's Hotel in Washington, sat briefly in the Pennsylvania Railroad depot waiting room before midnight.
