The subject was born near Zanesville on the Muskingum river. He moved with family to Freeport, Harrison county. At eleven his father and oldest brother died in the Civil War, forcing him to work. He labored on farms mines and rail projects for twenty one years without missing a payday. He built and paid for a home in Freeport, kept his family, and owed no one a cent when promoted foreman. He later served as foreman at Fairpoint Belmont county and at Valley Junction Tuscarawas county on the W. and L. E. Ry.
