A Charlton Iowa couple face ruin after a man mortgaged their farm to buy his wife diamond earrings. She attempted suicide during washing, caused by the debt, and fell on a Jersey cow, killing it. A gun burst injuring the husband, and the wife fled with a lightning rod peddler. The mortgage remains on the farm.
