The Hinckley disaster dominates state dispatches with 1000 residents affected and 62 dead at Sandstone Junction. Governor Nelson issues a relief proclamation and a state commission is formed to collect funds and supplies for the overwhelmed towns including Pine City and Duluth.
Duluth citizens gather relief for about 1000 refugees and ship supplies rapidly to the front. The Omaha road operates except for the Mason to Ashland segment. A bridge burned at Benoit and Juso north of Ashland. All St. Paul and Duluth trains run on schedule.
Relief efforts for Hinckley and surrounding areas are underway and growing. Funds and supplies from St. Paul Stillwater Minneapolis and Duluth support food clothing and medical care as Winter nears. Pine City hosts 300 to 400 refugees with relief organized by General Bunker. Two Harbors residents donate 400 and urge Governor Nelson to release state funds for all needy towns.
Filed a demurrer in the injunction cases stemming from the late strike. The defendants contest the sufficiency of the pleadings and seek to limit further orders. The matter proceeds to await a ruling on the demurrer and potential further pretrial steps.

Harvest hands are scarce around Jamestown as 1600 cars of stock will be shipped from Dickinson this season. A Grand Forks county farm yielded 5075 bushels of wheat from 202 acres. At Barnes county fair the best wheat bushel will take a premium of 50 dollars.
Rail service on most lines between St Paul and Duluth has been restored with Eastern Minnesota due to be back within a day. Bridges damaged by fire are being rebuilt and transfers occur where needed. Train No 63 from Duluth reached St Paul area earlier, reporting Baronette Granite Bashaw and Comstock destroyed and 58 houses burned at Shell Lake.
C M Loring of Minneapolis, chairman of the Minneapolis committee, wired for a special car over the St Paul and Duluth line to transport nine gravely injured to Minneapolis for better care. Captain W H Hart delivered tents at Pine City and Hinckley, with fifty tents placed in Pine City park and reserves distributed to local sites.
Mora Minnesota September 3 Pokegama Station on the St. Cloud and Hinckley branch of the Great Northern was completely burned. Twenty three persons are dead or missing and many injured. Flames consumed lumber yard saw mill hotel stores post office schoolhouse and sectionhouse. Twenty five families homeless. Six thousand tons of hay twenty head of horses and thirty cattle lost. Total property loss put at thirty thousand dollars with no insurance.
Fire rages near Rib Lake Taylor county threatening the town population 520. An engine from Chippewa Falls fights the flames. The Rib Lake Lumber company tannery and mills are at risk. Fire also endangers Cadet Cartwright and Rice Lake plus Long Lake resort cottage of General Ginty. Seven railroad bridges on the Omaha north division between Chippewa Falls and Superior have been destroyed.
Rear Admiral Walker spoke in Washington about his Hawaii trip to the navy department. He said Honolulu was quiet when he left in August and there were no prospects of an outbreak.

From Marquette Michigan on September 5 reports show massive forest fires across the South Shore belt with hundreds of homesteads ruined and timber losses estimated at 150 million feet. Most affected timber belongs to Diamond Match and the Nestores estate with wages rising for loggers as fires threaten more stands until rains in Nestoria ease the danger.
A relief train returned to Duluth with 227 Sandstone fire survivors and babes carried over a six mile trail. One hundred fifty people remained and a second train was sent for them. Many bodies lay in the town as flames destroyed Partridge leaving only one building intact. One life is reported lost.
Ashland Wisconsin September 5 unknown steamer and consorts have gone ashore in dense smoke on Sand Island about 50 miles from town. No information on the vessel's identity is available. The tug Britain has been dispatched to assist.
As searchers assess the great fire’s toll, authorities estimate more than 300 dead with likely 400 or more. Hinckley Pokegama and Sandstone lists show dozens identified. many on farms remain uncounted. A fierce 60 mph wind fueled the blaze, destroying homes and crops across a 300 mile farming district.
From Hinckley Minnesota dated September 5 the town reports a sudden surge of activity after a quiet start. An open shack became a cook house and an enclosed storage room was added for commissary supplies. Overnight residents camped in tents as volunteers increased and trains brought workers.
John Catter of Decorah Iowa is jailed on strong suspicion of killing his wife Mary Catter and coworker George Wennett at Burrak twelve miles north. Mrs. Catter’s body was found in a barn with two throat wounds. Wemett’s bullet death was discovered at a nearby schoolhouse. Catter suggests Wemett killed his wife and then suicided.
Two million of the new playing card stamps have been printed in two weeks by the bureau of printing and engraving. The stamp taxes the sale of every pack of cards, at manufacturers wholesalers and retailers, with penalties for unstamped cards under the new revenue act.
