Syrup of Figs Promises Gentle, System Cleansing Health

An advertisement extols Syrup of Figs as a pure liquid laxative improving health by cleansing the kidneys and liver, easing constipation, and relieving colds and fevers. It claims widespread satisfaction, warns against substitutes, and notes it is manufactured by the California Fig Syrup Co with 50¢ and $1 bottles.

Beadle County Oct 1895 Proceedings Abatements and Officials

Beadle County commissioners meet in Huron on October 7 1895. Abate delinquent 1892 road tax for J P Conkey estate and accept resignation of County Justice E C Patterson. Kemp elected to fill Patterson’s unexpired term. Coal bids opened with Joseph Daum lowest. contract for 50 tons hard coal and 25 tons Hocking Valley to be drawn. Various township and ward judge appointments made for November 5 1895 election. List of audited bills and salaries approved. Board adjourns to October 8 1895.

Buffalo boodlers and payroll padding scandal hits Burra

Three city employees Howard D. Herr deputy John M. Danahy and Joseph Burke were arrested on embezzlement charges for padding the street bureau payrolls with dummy names. Salaries were 1500 dollars a year each and losses allegedly run into thousands. Warrants issued by the mayor's secretary on information from George F. Matthews of The Express. Further arrests expected.

Deadly Saloon Fight In Woodward Enmeshes Noted Figures

Ex state Senator Temple Houston of Texas and ex Sheriff Jack Love figure in a deadly shootout in Woodward Oklahoma Territory. Lawyer Ed Jennings was killed and his brother John mortally wounded after a courtroom dispute over a beer theft case. Houston and Love surrendered to the sheriff. In a separate report, Bayard West Virginia suffered near total destruction by fire leaving the town without a fire department and prompting relief from Cumberland and other towns.
