G S Merwin of Rogers Brown Co pig iron dealers armed with a Winchester rifle and a revolver endured a 17 hour standoff with Chicago police at 85 Woodland Park. Police used chloroform and then sulfur in a furnace to incapacitate him. Merwin, 35, suffered brain injury from a prior kick to the head and was taken to Detention Hospital.
The United States Steamship Ranger arrived in port from Acapulco after a year at sea along Central and South American coasts. She is assigned as a receiving ship in San Francisco, to occupy the same position as the Independence at Mare Island.
