New Orleans reports a hurricane like storm moving from the northeast to Plaquemine Parish destroying Pointe a la Hache. Over 24 killed and many more wounded with wrecked buildings, flooded levees, and telegraph cutoffs.
A southeast gale since 4 a m has reached 50 mph by 1 p m driving water up the Mobile River to Royal street four blocks inland. Wholesale and much of the retail district lie underwater with thousands of dollars in goods damaged. Pilot boat Ida Low and bay boat Heroine wrecked. Crescent City missing. dredges in the channel reportedly lost. extensive regional disruption reported along the Louisville and Nashville line.
The storm has swept away the Biloxi bridge and severed telegraphic lines in every direction. Gardens in the marshes east of the city are missing and feared lost. Homes are unroofed, a cotton warehouse collapsed, smokestacks toppled, and manufacturing plants damaged by the gale.
Congress debated the silver purchase repeal with an amendment reviving free coinage and halting 20 percent of duties for countries using the silver standard. In the House, opposition to the federal election repeal measure was voiced. Separately, Great Northern and Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroads agreed to through sleepers Seattle to Chicago and launched family tourist cars with a $3 double berth rate to Puget Sound.
In New York on October 4 the opening game of the Ives versus Roberts, Jr. 10 000 point match ended with John Roberts Jr. defeating Frank C. Ives 1 001 to 542. The English champion won comfortably after the evening play.
Formal announcement states the Milwaukee Times will launch Tuesday Oct 10 as an eight page seven column daily with a sixteen page Sunday issue.
