Meade D. Detweiler of Harrisburg was unanimously elected grand exalted ruler of the Elks at the Buffalo peace conference. He rejected E. B. Hay’s claim to leadership, saying the order has the seal charter and rituals and can be healed within its own structure despite factional differences.
The 107th general assembly of the Presbyterian church adjourned in Pittsburg on May 29 after a swift final day. No deposition against Dr Briggs or action against the Presbyterian League of New York occurred. The moderator affirmed the church would stand by existing decisions, drawing applause.
The foreign office rejects the claim that Richards and Walker are British subjects and the British commissioner will report he was deceived by their statements. No action toward naming a successor to Mr Thurston. Hawaii remains unsettled due to reports of filibustering expeditions from the United States.

Surgeons used nitroglycerine digitalis and saline, while family and high officials mourned in the room. The end came as Mrs Gresham and others read scripture and offered prayers, with Secretary Lamont Uhl McAdoo Olney Jones Hamlin Thurber among witnesses in the adjoining rooms.
Walter Quinton Gresham rose to major general in the Union Army, later served as United States circuit judge for Indiana and held cabinet posts as postmaster general treasury secretary and secretary of state under Arthur and Cleveland. Born 1832 in Harrison County Indiana, his career spanned law military service and high office. He married Matilda McGrain and had two children. his home life revealed his generous, modest character despite public prominence.
The consulting physician and Mrs. Gresham remain at the bedside with the secretary’s son-in-law, Mr. Andrews, as the patient endures a deteriorating health episode. After a bad night Saturday and Sunday, the condition worsened Monday evening and he sank quickly until the end.
Monterey reports the sloop Cyclone bound for Japan and around the world was wrecked last Thursday near Point Sur in dense fog. The captain his wife and six sailors were aboard and are believed to have reached shore safely.

Fire discovered at 4 am destroyed two barracks along with the billiard room library cook house oil house commissary storehouse and commanding officer's office amid dry wood and high winds. The magazine was saved and troops will occupy tents until barracks are rebuilt.
Conductor James Ring an Omaha Railway veteran and brakeman Shoupman were instantly killed at Hawthorne Wisconsin during a flying switch operation in a railroad yard. The accident occurred on May 29.

St Louis May 29 Richard Roze wetter a messenger for Stifel Brewing was knocked down on a street route to the bank and robbed of a satchel holding 1950 dollars in cash and a large batch of checks.
In Omaha a Missouri river fisherman found the bodies of Mrs Ida Notsen and her two young children. The 40 year old Omaha school teacher had vanished last fall amid political disappointment and a threatened suicide. The victims were bound with heavy rope, their bodies tied together, suggesting they were killed before being cast into the river. Her husband is a Chicago merchant.
An officer of the French legation in the army of France sought plans and designs for a new submarine torpedo boat from Secretary Herbert. The offer to exchange US plans for French submarine or other vessels was proposed but not accepted, leaving the matter unsettled.
In a lengthy election speech Sgt Crispi reported a budget showing a 80,000,000 liter reduction and 100,000,000 liter revenue increase. The 1893 import export gap fell from 237,000,000 to 69,000,000 lire in 1894. Emigration for 1894 declined by 23,000 persons versus 1893, and the treasury’s position and credit were restored to pre-1893 levels.
Washington May 24 The president ordered a suspension of payments to Nez Perces Indians totaling 600000 while claims are examined. The treasury seeks to learn the rationale, suspected to reflect interior secretary recommendations, delaying the audit process.
The Texas Department of Education on appeal from Victoria County ruled that Catholic nuns cannot teach in public schools and that all sectarian elements must be removed from public classrooms, ending free nun-run schools in Southwest Texas.
Lake Beenton Minn May 24 J P Peterson a farmer escaped death after a team spooked a pulverizer ran over him. The machine pierced the skull in several places and doctors removed two skull fragments while hoping for recovery.
West Superior May 24. It is claimed the Duluth and Winnipeg will build a big combined lumber and coal dock on Allouez bay near its terminals. The dock will be 375 feet wide by 3,000 feet in length. Plans will be prepared and contracts let in a few days.
Oscar Wilde is found guilty of gross immorality in London and given two years of hard labor. Alfred Taylor, his accomplice, receives the same sentence. The case follows intense courtroom debate over Wilde's letters to Lord Alfred Douglass and public Wild references.
Wilde and Taylor, sentenced Saturday for heinous crimes, attended the prison chapel at Penteville. They wore prison garb with cropped hair and will be allowed only four friend visits per year on good conduct.
Andrew Engebretson, 60, of Coon Valley Wisconsin, was jailed on charges of attempting to murder his two sons, a daughter in law, and Claus Nelson by arsenic poisoning. The poison was placed in coffee and caused illness after breakfast. Engebretson is said to have threatened his family and allegedly entered the house at night to put poison in the coffee pot.
Deputy sheriff serves papers on saloon proprietors in Virginia in a suit by George L. Stroupe to recover large sums of money lost at games run before the mayor closed them. Stroupe sues the saloon operators, not the winners, with more suits to follow.
The Prussian diet upper house approved Count von Morbach's resolution by 72 to 88 votes urging steps toward an immediate settlement of the currency question through an international bimetallic agreement.
Maprio May 18 dispatch from Havana reports Spanish troops defeated the insurgent forces under Maceo near Guantanamo. Insurgents lost 40 killed and many wounded. on the Spanish side Lieutenant Bosch was killed and several soldiers wounded.
Secretary Gresham passed a comfortable night and improves. Representative Hitt gains strength. General Coggswell did not rest well and remains ill. Miss Abigail Dodge is slightly better. General Casey is better.
Salt Lake notes the second day of the silver conference devoted to action plans. Many delegates voiced vows but no firm resolution emerged.
