SHERMAN reports the ex secretary arrived at Santiago de Cuba aboard the Paris. Witnesses say his condition is much improved and he is described as absolutely without foundation in the latest salve report. The terse dispatch notes no new allegations and emphasizes improved health aboard the vessel.
News from Santiago de Cuba reports no truth to US cables claiming John Sherman was dead. Paris arrived and said Sherman is alive and improving. He may be moved to the Chicago once conditions allow.

Senn said Cuban troops relied on canned roast beef and bacon which he believed was boiled and tasteless, leaving emaciated troops on return. He proposed dried beef as future army staple. Corliss noted soldiers disliked canned beef in Cuba.

Kingston Jamaica March 22 The American liner Paris carrying ex Secretary John Sherman and his party is in West Indian waters. Sherman’s condition is critical and unlikely to recover tonight as heat weakens him. The Chicago cruiser has not yet arrived but is expected to meet the Paris at Santiago de Cuba. The vessel may first touch Guantanamo and has instructions to hasten to follow.
A Manila cable reports a decisive clash within 48 hours as Aguinaldo directs insurgents. Rebels retreating to Malolos burn villages and destroy trenches while MacArthur advances, keeping men under cover to reduce casualties. Americans press from Polo and Malabon awaiting daylight for renewed attack.
A Manila dispatch reports South Dakota volunteers suffered ten killed and eleven wounded while charging an open space east of the railway near Marilao. MacArthur’s division crossed the Marilao river advancing north as insurgents repulsed Americans there with heavy losses. Ninety insurgents were counted dead.

Workers in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys warn of a general strike if a 10 percent wage advance is not granted by May 1. The notice came from furnaces employees in Younestown, C., dated March 29.
