Smallpox fears prompt vaccination push in midwest states
The 1885 outbreak in Montreal traced to a Chicago Pullman car conductor spurred a public health drive. Chicago and New York saw rising death rates, with the city reporting 27.8 percent in a recent week. The Huron South Dakota Board of Health urged vaccination within seven years, stressing true vaccination with clean lymph and proper care to prevent sores. A later ad promotes Scott's Emulsion as body repair medicine.
