Huron Wins Host City For Grand Lodge Meeting

At the annual meeting of the grand lodge A F and A M held in Sioux Falls on the 12th, officers for the year ahead were elected led by Worshipful Grand Master Charles Hill of Springfield and Deputy Grand Master F A Brown of Aberdeen. After a lively contest between Huron and Deadwood, Huron was chosen as the next meeting city.

Broadland Picnic Events Highlight Hitchcock Area

The Alger band from Huron will provide music at the Broadland picnic on June 19. Hitchcock junior nine faces Huron junior nine at the Broadland picnic Wednesday. Prof. Gage of Huron College preached at the Presbyterian church. Mr. Tell of Huron will speak at the Broadland picnic next Wednesday. Butter shipments from Hitchcock creamery totaled 4,380 pounds in six days, up 540 pounds from the prior week.

Community Picnic Date Set For Wednesday June 19

The town will hold its annual picnic on Wednesday June 19. A cordial invitation is extended to everybody. Rev. Mr. Saxton learned his sister in Iowa had died and he left the same day to attend the funeral.

Bennett Shattuck-Beard Wedding Gathers 250 Guests

The Minneapolis Tribune notes the wedding of Florence Emily Bennett Shat tuck to William Sherman Beard in Minneapolis on the twelfth. Mrs. Frederick Kent of Chicago served as matron of honor with out-of-town guests including Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Kent Huron Mrs. W. A. Kent and Richard Kent Sioux City. A reception followed from 4 to 6 with 250 guests. The bridal party aided in greeting guests at the reception. Pink and green decor, ferns and roses, chandeliers dressed as peonies.

Huron College Commencement Week Highlights

The commencement opened with Rev. Henry T. McEwan delivering a baccalaureate sermon at the Opera House on Sunday. Laurels to Miss Blanche Faber for her musical degree. trustees elected C. H. Corbett as natural science chair and Hattie E. Van Arsdale as matron. The Ladies' College association reported nearly $1000 raised for repairs and equipment. Dr. McEwan spoke on Christian Citizenship at the evening exercises and several departments awarded diplomas to students including Musical Miss Blanche Faber and Normal Minnie Brandestedt.

Precipitation Record Broke Across Beadle County

The region saw heavy rains Friday night and Saturday morning pushing Beadle county into a near cloudburst with 4 78 inches total in the period and 3.17 inches by Friday morning. Despite the soaking ground additional 1.61 inches fell Friday night and more rain continued into the afternoon. Normal monthly precipitation is 3.55 inches, now surpassed with several wet days ahead.

Lightning damages cattle and horses across several farms

During the week ending Saturday June 15 a series of electrical storms caused livestock losses. Fred Hosman of Burr Oak lost four head of cattle, Sam Buckley of Liberty and Mr. Fiege of Theresa each lost a horse, J. C. Hoover of Theresa lost one, Chas. Lampe lost a horse on his farm east of town, and one cow died on the Foster and Thompson ranch.

Odd Fellows sell Riverside lots to fund artesian well

The Odd Fellows plan to raise funds by selling cemetery lots in Riverside to finance an artesian well on the grounds. Kilpatrick Post G A R offers an extra 50 by 100 foot tract to the post, with the agreement to sink a well contingent on this and other lodge sales.
