Death toll rise at Chicago World’s Fair fire ruins

At the World’s Fair grounds the cold storage warehouse fire has killed at least 15, with three more corpses found in the debris. A lineman’s belt and pinchers identify one body, while many visitors and workers remain missing. Columbian guards report several electricians and others were inside when the blaze began as officials debate responsibility and promise a full inquiry.

John B. Skinner president of Hercules Iron Works says the cold storage building on the world’s fair grounds is the strongest, built under guidance of the fair construction department. He notes Burnham and his crew were often present, with $100,000 invested in the structure and machinery inside worth as much again.

Fire Destroys WV Central Mine No 1 Beams Escape

A mine explosion at West Virginia Central Railroad property in Mine No. 1 trapped ninety miners in drifts as flames and smoke swept through. All men escaped except two who were sealed in an isolated drift and were believed burned to death. The disaster occurred near Cumberland Maryland on date unclear.

North Galveston Improvement Association Receivership

The North Galveston Land and Improvement association near Galveston Texas has been placed in the hands of a receiver with liabilities around 500000 of which 160000 is owed to contractors and local parties. Lands townsites and improvements at North Galveston are listed as assets. The receiver Mr R A Reess was appointed with a 25000 bond. The concern has suffered months of no wages and widespread poverty among workers and others attracted to North Galveston by promises. The receiver will seek relief measures and aims to settle debts through proper management and market stringency.

The Chamberlain Investment company made an assignment to Lewis C worth after the Denver Savings bank attached property for a debt of 3669.10. Liabilities total 1,112,188.30 with assets at 2,940,691.45. Eastern creditors are involved though the largest liabilities are in Denver. The firm is heavily tied to real estate ventures in Texas and Puget Sound cities.
