At Ann Arbor fire department headquarters a cannon exploded while firing a last charge injuring four firefighters. Frank Kapp lost a leg, Charles Carroll both hands were blown off, while Henry McLaren and William Rettich suffered severe injuries. A mother and infant were killed nearby. Separately in Ontario a mother and daughter were killed crossing a moving train.
A boiler explosion on the Volga steamer Altona near Romanov killed twenty six passengers, including General Petrushewski. The blast tore the upper deck, coal fire spread through the wreck, and the boat burned to the water line before sinking with many aboard.
Reddy Estes drowned in the Missouri River at Omaha after joining a balloon ascent by Gibbies and Gould. Estes failed to cut loose at about 8 000 feet during descent and fell with the balloon.
A man fell into the river about a mile east of the beach and, unable to swim, disappeared beneath the water. Rescue crews initiated a search but could not locate him. The incident remains under investigation by local authorities.
In New York on July 5 Christina Schiedler age 18 accidentally shot and killed her sweetheart Henry Sohl at home while the couple discharged revolvers to celebrate the Fourth. The incident occurred during the holiday celebration.

St Paul July 5 All civil proceedings against County Auditor James H Burns have been terminated by the county commissioners. Burns sent a check for 2500 dollars signed by Banholzer, accepted as full satisfaction of all claims and instructed the county attorney to halt further prosecutions.
In St Paul on July 5 Judge Brill denied the motion for a new trial by the State of Minnesota against Annie M. Smith a colored woman serving life in the penitentiary for the killing of Edward Hoppe at Basslake on July 4 last year.
