True Uniformity Gains in Pittsburg Coal Talks
Pittsburg July 30 The true uniformity conference of Pittsburg district coal operators closed after two days. The 21 section agreement was adopted section by section with broad support, Judge Owens stating Colonel Read will co operate if 50 percent of operators sign. A five member committee was named to secure signatures. ratification awaits sufficient signers. The plan includes wage cash payments, 2000 pounds per ton, check weighmen, full mine car coal credit, end of company stores, semi monthly paydays, uniform prices, screens under half inch, and a 10 cent per ton penalty for violations, distributed pro rata among signers. Effective only with 95 percent signing by Jan 1, 1898. The move aims to avoid triggering the great strike, while excluding miners leaders from talks by giving the commission to be named by the subscribers. Many contracts exist at fixed prices, allowing supply to meet those terms. This signals a looming split between miners and operators.
