In Maprip on August 4 riots erupted as tax regulations affected consumption goods. Police and rioters clashed injuring many. shops on principal streets were wrecked. The British garrison at Fort Chak dara was relieved by reinforcements as authorities contained the disturbances. Women blocked mounted gendarmes amid efforts to clear streets.
British relief under General Blood arrived at dawn and routed the insurgent tribes near Fort Chakdara in Chitral. Colonels Goldney and Meiklejohn led two columns in the dawn assault, and the garrison was reported safe by Secretary Milton in the House of Commons.
Oran reports enormous forest fires in Telagh district spreading across 20 square miles. A 1,500-strong foreign legion force has fought the flames day and night for a week but has not halted the spread.
In an interview the Greek foreign minister stated King George would abdicate if Europe established control of Greek finances. He said this view has already influenced powers toward the German proposal and that a lighter scheme might be arranged.
Alfred Aliff United States vice consul in Canton reports the West river has opened to trade as far west as Woo Chan Fu Ng Chan treaty port. Several other river towns along the stream are now opened to commerce, extending the access to the inland areas.
In Havana on May 4 4 Chaptain General Weyiler signs an order expelling a comical mix of names including Eauie Garcia and George Eugene Ersson reporters from New York newspapers. The arrest status remains unclear as of May 11.
United States Senator M S Quay of Pennsylvania plans an early trip to the Hawaiian Islands to study the country and its prospects and to assess the benefits and drawbacks of annexation. He hints at reporting findings to the foreign relations committee. Senator Morgan of Alabama also plans an extended Hawaiian visit and supports annexation.
Acting Secretary of War Meiklejohn orders Captain Ray and Lieutenant Richardson of the Eighth Infantry to depart Fort D A Russell Wyoming for Alaska. They will travel to Circle City to study gold field conditions and sail from Seattle on the 5th. The War Department expects entry into the Klondike region this season and a possible post near the gold fields depending on their report.
Victoria B C August 4 The steamer Queen arrives from the North with no new news but reports 400 people camped at Skagway bay and 50 at Dyea. Packers cannot handle the goods into the lakes and seven boats left after the Queen will arrive, risking a major bottleneck. Many men and horses up the line will not be able to move freight this year.
Mundy Indiana August 4 Ball Brothers, a leading fruit jar maker, plan to introduce glass blowing machines for jars. About 200 workers have received notices that their services will not be needed after the month. Machines will be phased in gradually and will perform work at half the cost with better quality than the blowers.
Carl Cronheim, an immigrant worker in the United States, has been summoned to Sweden by the death of his elder brother Count Henrik Julius Cronheim. As the sole living Cronheim of Flesta, he inherits four large properties and an income of $50,000 annually.
Fort Copas Iowa August 4 1899 R B Canfield baked two apples in the sun on a board with unobstructed sunlight. The heat took two days to cook the fruit through resulting in a brown turn. He ate them with cream and sugar.
The Bay View plant of the Illinois Steel Company held a long meeting on August 4 but no agreement was reached on starting the top and bottom mill. A committee was named to confer with the bosses and no action will be taken until the conference result is known.
Detroit Toronto and Chicago split the honors on junior day at the Northwestern Amateur Rowing Association regatta in Detroit Michigan on August 4. A quarter mile dash for senior single sculls was the lone senior event. A fair crowd watched the events.
Providence Aug 4 professors at Brown University issue a remonstrance to the corporation protesting its action against President Andrews and urging reconsideration of the entire matter.
In New York, conferences settled last week with Morgan interests agreeing to appoint an operating man as Northern Pacific president. Daniel S. Lamont is to be vice president and take an active role in management. The syndicate including Schiff, Rockefeller, Hill and others will be represented in the new directory. Details of the adjustment and the president’s name will be announced within a fortnight. Lamont is expected to accept the vice presidency.
The Evening Post reports a possible selection of Frederick D. Underwood to lead the Northern Pacific Railway, though no official confirmation exists. Underwood has been a railroad man since 1868, holding roles from brakeman to superintendent, and later serving as general manager of the Soo Line.
The July monthly financial report shows receipts of 39 027 364 and expenditures of 50 100 908, leaving a deficit of 11 075 544.
